BODYTALK

Hidden Gestures

Hidden Gestures - Kiln formed glass

Cathryn has been selected as a participating artist in an international group exhibition of works interpreting various aspects of body, sex and gender. At the Glasmuseet Ebeltoft, Denmark from 5th April till 28 September 2014.

Throughout history, concepts of body and sex have had a significant impact. From ancient idealization of the harmonious, athletic body to the 1960s "liberated" body and gender perceptions to the more recent depreciation of the "natural" body in favour of the "modified" eternally young body. In the wake of the development of the concept of the body, and that many have come to realize that society not only shapes personality and behaviour, it also shapes the way in which the body appears, there have also been changes to the perception of gender. Today, traditional gender perceptions and stereotypes, including the concept of "the ideal family unit" are in transition and there is a lively debate about equal rights, women in top positions and men in more domestic roles.

But what happens to our perception of body, sex and gender when the concepts are illustrated and reinterpreted by a group of international artists? The selection of work from the applicants will be based on their relevance to the theme of the exhibition.

HOT Glass! – New work from the Furnace

Falling

Falling 2011 Hand painted blown graal embryo, picked up hot, cased and blown H 17cm W 21

Cathryn is working on a new body of work for the exhibition Hot Glass! - New work from the Furnace to be held at the Contemporary Applied Arts Gallery, London from 19 April – 25 May 2013.

Through these pieces Cathryn is investigating the interplay between the different techniques of stained glass and hot glass by utilising the graal technique. Instead of engraving the glass embryo, she paints on it, using traditional stained glass enamels. These marks are fired in to the surface of the embryo in a kiln before being reheated and re-blown into their final forms in the hot shop.

This process pushes the process of glass painting and glass blowing beyond their traditional limits enabling Cathryn to produce unique canvases in hot glass.

Cathryn's Static Movement was selected for the Contemporary Glass Society's exhibition 'Glass Games: a desire, a dream, a vision' in 2012 at The Gallery in Redchurch Street London. The ethos behind Static Movement is to create the perception of motion from static images embedded within glass. The piece is essentially an inverted zoetrope, containing Eadweard Muybridge's iconic sequence of the sprinter. The idea is to create the illusion of the sprinter's movement utilizing the images within, images that will move and oscillate as the observer's position in relation to the piece changes.

Memory Surfing

Cathryn's 'Memory Surfing' piece won the glass category in the 2009  V&A Inspired By… competition.

The judges commented that:

'At first what appears to be an object formed simply of blue translucent glass, upon closer inspection, reveals ghostly transferred photographs which add nuance and mystery to the meaning of this piece. Just as Hokusai captured a fleeting moment of time and crashing movement in The Great Wave, the snapshots of Memory Surfing, set in undulating glass, evoke memories that appear to be both fleeting and frozen in time.'

'Memory Surfing' pieces are available for commission using the client's own photographs.

In 2010 Cathryn’s Synergy Series was selected as a finalist for the Bullseye Glass E-merge 2010 Juried Kiln-glass exhibition. See www.bullseyeglass.com/emerge
